While playing some catch up with Plotz, I came upon a brief chapter discussing Jezebel and her devious deprivement and defrauding of Naboth and his land.
Coming from New England as I do, I was required in school to extensively learn the history surrounding the Salem Witch trials. There is an enormous and fascinating history about these events and I could really speak volumes about them to anyone willing to hear. But, the most interesting story I can draw from the recesses of my memory on this cold subject would have to weigh upon the sad story of Giles Corey.
Giles was a relatively well to do land owner and member of the church, who--like most of the community--had a great deal of injustice dealt to him. Namely his wife was hung for being a witch, and the accused himself of being a "warlock" by the girls Ann Putnam and her cohorts Abigael Williams and Mercy (though she had none) Lewis.
There is unceasing fountains of investigative research into the Salem Witch trials, of why and how they happened. One of the more interesting or odd of these studies links the entire scare to moldy bread due to the unseasonably wet year they had, this moldy bread is supposed to have contained trace amounts of LSD which occur naturally as a fungus or Rye (an ergot) breaks down and creates the drug.
Though this is a wild piece of history that i find interesting, my point does not lie within.
Instead, and this is certainly an aspect of the scare I believe to be influential, there were certain societal figures who, using the mechanism of fear, pit humans against one another in order to gain support for militaristic action and usurpation of their resources.
Now it is believed that these girls may have been influenced to testify against certain community figures for certain personal gains. Now Giles (after his wife had been executed) was the last remaining head of the family and rightful owner to his bountiful land. His sons at this time were rather young.
So...jumping ahead. He is accused and asked to plea to this offense.
But...despite his plea, guilty or non, if he is "found guilty" in court his land will be taken and not given to any of his descendants as he, through the court has entered this circus.
So Giles decides not to entertain the circus, decides not to enter the court as it were and refuses to plea.
In order to get him to speak, those torturous, fervently religious, power hungry, hell bent on taking land by means of fear mongered public supported,- water board poor Giles.
oh, sorry i mean the "board" him.
meaning they lay him down on the ground, place a board on him and add stone upon stone atop the board until the weight becomes unbearable and eventually he cracks (probably literally)
But Ole' Giles, knowing what will become of him and his land (remember: stolen form him and not given to his sons) has only one thing to say to his accusers and torturers: "more stone"
anyways, more or less I wanted to share this piece of history that makes New England awesome (...does it though?)
But the story of Naboth- who is falsely accused to being blasphemous and subsequently stoned to death also, in order that his land may be taken.
